How the overall band is worked out

Your overall band is the average of your four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band. When the average falls exactly between two half bands it rounds up: an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 becomes 7.0. An average of 6.125 rounds down to 6.0.

Listening and Reading each have 40 questions, and your number of correct answers is converted to a band using the tables below. General Training Reading needs more correct answers than Academic for the same band. Writing and Speaking are marked directly in bands by an examiner.

The exact conversion can shift by a mark or so between test versions, so treat any result as an estimate, not an official score.
